ChineseToday | Young jade carver adds vitality to time-honored craftsmanship

(250531) -- ANSHAN, May 31, 2025 (Xinhua) -- Tang Xiao prepares for a livestreaming show at his studio in Xiuyan Man Autonomous County, northeast China's Liaoning Province, May 20, 2025.

Tang Xiao, born in the 2000s, hails from Xiuyan Man Autonomous County, Liaoning Province. Growing up in the studio of his father Tang Shuai, a master jade carver, he was deeply affected by the art from an early age. After graduating from the China Academy of Art in 2023, he returned to his hometown and founded a studio.

Tang preserves the traditional carving technique while infusing his designs with academic aesthetics. To cater to young people's interests, he incorporates traditional Chinese cultural elements and modern designs into his pieces, blending professional mastery with youthful energy.

The essence of the jadeite's texture and the exquisite craftsmanship of jade carving run parallel in Tang's pieces. He resorts to short-video platforms to showcase his works and promote the art, with one video on a brief introduction of jade carving culture clocking up 100,000 views.

Speaking of the future, Tang hopes to use contemporary expressions to make the ancient jade radiate new charm. (Xinhua/Wu Qinghao)
