2020 YAO Foundation Charity Game will be held in Wuhan in October to pay tribute to the heroic city in battling COVID-19.
BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The 2020 YAO Foundation Charity Game will be held in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province on October 3-4, organizers announced here on Friday.
The move aims to pay tribute to the heroic city in battling COVID-19 earlier this year and boost the city's confidence in bringing back its normal life.
The YAO Foundation Charity Game has been held for nine editions since its debut in 2007, seeing participation from over 150 Chinese and American basketball players.
A special team will step on the court this year, with its players mainly coming from male nurses, who set up a basketball team in Wuhan in 2015. These medical staff, who worked on the front line against the virus, will join some foreign players and entertainment stars to compete with the Chinese Star Team.
"I hope to see (national player) Wang Zhelin on the court, as both of us come from Fujian province," said Zhang Dongdong, a doctor from Zhongnan Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University.
The YAO Foundation, founded by Chinese basketball icon Yao Ming in 2008, aims to improve Physical Education in China's rural areas and to promote all-round development among Chinese teenagers.
The foundation introduced a basketball season to Chinese primary schools in 2012, dispatching volunteers from university students majoring in Physical Education to assist primary schools in rural areas.
As of 2019, the foundation had sent out 2,240 volunteers, and almost 1.15 million schoolchildren in rural areas have benefitted from the program. ■
