TOKYO, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Monday as the market mood inherited an upbeat lead from Wall Street last week and was bolstered by hopes for an anti-viral COVID-19 treatment which has showed some positive results in a U.S. clinical trial.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 493.93 points, or 2.22 percent, from Friday to close the day at 22,784.74.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 37.82 points, or 2.46 percent, to finish at 1,573.02.

Mining, iron and steel, and air transportation-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
